We call it the “nerd prom,” hoping that a dose of irony will inoculate us. But there’s no use denying it: The White House Correspondents’ Association’s annual dinner is a deeply narcissistic event. I realize I’m jumping on the bandwagon late here – and any bandwagon that carries both Tom Brokaw and Sarah Palin is by definition crowded. WASHINGTON - After the slaughter last month of 20 schoolchildren at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., cynics said the response wouldn’t be any different from those to the many mass killings that came before. After the tiny caskets disappeared, so would the shock, the grief and the resolve. Emotion, after all, is no match for the National Rifle Association.
WASHINGTON - As if a peaceful Thanksgiving dinner wasn’t enough of a challenge, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had to spend her holiday chasing an even more unattainable ideal: peace in the Middle East.

WASHINGTON — When a scandal like the GSA’s $823,000 trip to Las Vegas comes along, you see that it takes truly risible details, like an actual clown in attendance, to move the outrage dial in Washington. I mean no disrespect to anyone else’s outrage about the sushi bar, the mind reader, the commemorative coins or the professional photographer to document it all. Feel free to remain outraged over those details. What’s truly outrageous, however, or at least depressing, is that in scandals like this, too often we get all the maddening details but none of the satisfying consequences.
WASHINGTON — The Mad Men of the Republican Party have captured another convert. Scott Brown, the otherwise severely moderate senator from Massachusetts who won Ted Kennedy’s seat in a special election two years ago, has signed on as a co-sponsor of the Blunt amendment.
