Curiosity may have killed the cat but it never seemed to hurt my dad, Jim O'Rourke. Maybe the reason I chose a profession where one asks questions for a living can be traced to my dad's ceaseless curiosity. Dad never had the chance to go to college, but he was the most well-read man I've ever known. He would constantly put me to shame by asking if I'd read this or that news story. It's not like the opportunity to keep up on current events wasn't available to me.
Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Minn., on Friday strongly objected to the possibility of U.S. military re-intervention in Iraq as that nation faces a mounting insurgency. His objections were made in response to a veteran's question at a round table the congressman organized to discuss issues at the Veterans Affairs. The session was conducted at the Crow Wing County Land Services Building. Nolan said Iraqi military commanders have reported members of their own military forces are cutting and running from rebel fighters. "We gave them a chance," he said of the Iraqi government. The retired DNR district forester was presented with the National Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal Friday at a Veterans Round Table conducted by Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Minn. at the Crow Wing County Land Services Building.
Living in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, it's easy for Brainerd area residents to take clean water for granted. That's why the Ponto Lake resident is one of the organizers for the Central Lakes and Brainerd Lakes Sunrise Rotary Clubs' first Rotary Ride for Clean Water on June 21.

Former Brainerd Police Chief Ralph Hitchens was remembered by colleagues who worked with him during his tenure in Brainerd as a "breath of fresh air." Hitchens died May 8, according to the Star Tribune of Minneapolis. Hitchens served as Brainerd's top police officer from June of 1983 to February of 1991. Brainerd Mayor James Wallin, who was council president during Hitchens' time in Brainerd, said there had been issues in the police department before Hitchens took over the job. "I always thought he was a good chief," Wallin said.
