Oh, what a difference a week makes.

The temperature on Wednesday peaked at 48 degrees, breaking the previous daily record of 46 degrees for Feb. 16 set in 1998.

A week ago, on Feb. 9, the high temperature was 12 degrees, the low was 17 degrees below zero and the average snow depth was about 17 inches, according to information collected by the State Climatology Office. On Wednesday the snow depth was an average of 11 inches and dropping.

Thursday is also expected to be above-average as far as temperatures go, with highs of 43 to 48 degrees, partly sunny skies and southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, according to the forecast from the National Weather Service in Duluth.

For mid-February the average high temperature is 27 degrees and the average low temperature is 1 degree below zero.

Into the weekend the weather should return to closer to normal for mid-February, with a high temp of 18 to 23 degrees on Friday, a 30-percent chance of snow and west winds 20 to 25 mph.

After dropping to 2 to 7 degrees Friday night, high temperatures on Saturday are expected to be 18 to 23 degrees; on Sunday 22 to 27 degrees and on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 23 to 28 degrees.

Don’t pack away the winter clothes just yet.

Kevin Kraujalis, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Duluth, said the 8- to 14-day outlook trends toward below-normal temperatures.

Kraujalis said he couldn’t rule out seeing high temps return to the single digits.

“At least for the next few weeks it wouldn’t be a surprise, but the worst of it, the truly barbaric stuff you’ve seen, I think that might be a little hard to attain,” Kraujalis said.

“It was nice and toasty (Wednesday), enjoy Thursday and then it’s back to reality for the weekend.”
