After a string of record temps, a record matched on the first day of spring
Brainerd continued its record-setting ways Tuesday, matching a record that hasn’t been reached in 74 years.
If not for overcast skies, the record would likely have been replaced entirely. But on the day when spring began, Brainerd tied the warm weather record high of 61 degrees. The high temp fell one degree short of the predicted high for the day from the National Weather Service.
The average temperature for this date is 40 degrees. The record low for March 20 is 17 below. But that’s going back in time to 1899. On this date in 1982, residents were shoveling a fresh 10-inch snowfall. And in 1965, the Brainerd area had a 30-inch snow depth.
The lakes area is in a shower pattern for the remainder of the week with at least a slight chance of showers just after the first thunderstorm of the season struck Monday night.
Temperatures should be near 60 degrees into the coming weekend and into next week with the sun expected to return Saturday.
