National Weather Service issues flash flood watch

A flash flood watch was issued for southern Cass, Crow Wing and southern Aitkin counties with heavy rain expected Tuesday, June 19.

The flash flood watch went into effect late Monday night and extends through Wednesday afternoon.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop late Monday night with heavy rain possible. Even if storms diminish Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service in Duluth expects storms to increase in intensity Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Rainfall amounts may be from 2 inches to 4 inches, with some spots receiving even higher amounts.

There is an 80 percent chance for thunderstorms with heavy rain Tuesday in the Brainerd lakes area. The high is expected to reach 75 degrees. There is a 70 percent chance for storms Tuesday night.

The storms, some of which could be severe, include a chance for large hail and damaging winds. Thunderstorms continue as possibilities in the week’s forecast. Thursday and Friday are expected to be mostly sunny and in the 70s before a chance of thunderstorms and showers returns Friday night and Saturday. Sunday is predicted to bring sunny skies and nearly 80 degrees.
