Winter weather advisory - Saturday may be slick

A wintery mix may be messing with holiday cheer this weekend.

The National Weather Service in Duluth reports a 100 percent chance of precipitation. With temperatures bolstered by a southeast breeze rising to a high near 36, the bad news is the moisture may come first as rain, then freezing rain and finally snow.

A winter weather advisory for sleet, freezing rain and snow for southern Cass, all of Crow Wing and southern Aitkin counties was in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday.

“Anyone with travel plans should be prepared for slippery roads and reduced visibility,” the National Weather Service (NWS) reported. “Slow down when driving and allow for extra stopping distance because you may lose control of your vehicle if you try to slow down or stop quickly.”

The rain or freezing rain is expected before 9 a.m. Saturday. Snow is then likely to follow between 9 a.m. and noon with 2 to 4 inches of snow possible. There is the potential for light accumulating ice before the freezing rain quickly turns to snow in the late morning. Periods of heavy snow are possible in the late morning and early afternoon.

“The combination of ice and wet heavy snow will produce potentially dangerous driving conditions, along with the possibility of downed tress and or power lines.” the NWS reported.

A 30 percent chance for snow continues Saturday night as the low drops to 23 degrees. For Sunday, there is another 30 percent chance of snow with a high of 28.

The sun is expected to return next week at least beneath partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will remain relatively mild in the mid to upper 20s until Friday. Lows aren’t expected to dip below zero but could drop down to the single digits on Thursday night.

A chance for more snow returns Wednesday and Thursday.
