Ringing in the new year is expected to be joined by the coldest temperatures of the season.

New Year’s Eve day’s high temperature should be above zero degrees, but not by much. The National Weather Service in Duluth is forecasting a high of 1 degree. Sunny skies will be bright but deceiving for any degree of warmth as a northwest wind gusts as high as 20 mph.

The weather service issued a wind-chill advisory for Cass, Crow Wing and Aitkin counties as dangerous and “very cold wind chills” blow across northeast Minnesota. That wind, mixed with cold air, will combine for a wind chill between 15 and 25 degrees below zero on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

As the last seconds of 2012 tick away and 2013 dawns, the temperature is expected to drop to 14 degrees below.

Don’t expect a lot of relief for New Year’s Day. The forecast calls for sunny skies again, which have been in short supply of late, but the temperature may not surpass 13 degrees for the day’s high.

The subzero temps ringing in the new year are the only ones forecast for the first week of the new year. The rest of the week calls for temperatures in the upper teens to low 20s with lows in the single digits.

It’s probably too early to look for a January thaw, but the extended forecast projects a high of 26 on Saturday and 25 on Sunday.

The next chance for snow arrives Wednesday with a 40 percent chance for light accumulation during the day and into the night.
