All that snow wasn't exactly the wish of organizers of the 19th annual Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza.

Crow Wing County sheriff's officials checked ice conditions Monday afternoon in Hole-in-the-Day Bay of Gull Lake.

Mother Nature was cooperating. Monday morning's low was 25 below.

Ice thickness ranged from 11 to 16 inches.

"We have not seen this much ice, this early, at this time, for many years," said Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl.

A measurement of 16 inches was taken in one of the four holes drilled on Hole-in-the-Day Bay Monday. The first hole drilled measured 14 inches, the second 11 inches and the last two 16 inches. Measurements are being taken for the tournament slated for Jan. 24. Brainerd Dispatch/ Steve Kohls

Slush may be a factor in spotty areas of the fishing contest.

Organizers are considering asking a snowmobile club's members to pack the snow in the area by riding over the region with sleds.
