20 years ago (1990)

The job of managing the six Mississippi River headwater reservoir lakes was described by the Corps of Engineers as a guessing game. With moisture reserves at half-normal no one knows if water will have to be released to help with Twin Cities drought conditions.

30 years ago (1980)

Tom Herron, head coach of the Brainerd Golden Gloves boxing team, is not a man to make rash predictions. So when he picked Jim Crawford, Staples High School senior, to win the Upper Midwest 165-pound title, people listened. And Crawford did win.

40 years ago (1970)

The question of what is a tolerable length of hair for a Brainerd High school student is now under consideration by the school board. The matter came up when a boy and his parents said they lived in Denver and Minnetonka and his hair was accepted there, but not here.

60 years ago (1950)

(Adv.) Starts Sunday at the Paramount Theatre: "Dear Wife," a Riotous Comedy starring William Holden and Joan Caulfield. At the Brainerd Theater it's "Whirlpool," starring Richard Conte and Gene Tierney.

80 years ago (1930)

A burglar was frightened away from a northside Brainerd home Sunday evening after he had half entered the home through a bedroom window. Awakened by the intruder, the householder switched on the light, sending the man running down the street.

100 years ago (1910)

W.J. Howatt, district manager for the Northwestern Telephone Exchange company, came up today to look after the rebuilding of the exchange. J.S. Moffatt, of the Western Electric Co., was here to look after putting in the switchboard for the telephone exchange.
