Workshop: How to keep a lake healthy OUTDOORS NOTES | COMPILED BY BRIAN S. PETERSON | OUTDOORS EDITOR Outdoors Editor Lake leaders are invited to a free daylong workshop June 14 in Ideal Corners that will provide practical solutions and technical information about the best ways to help keep a lake healthy.
The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ideal Township Hall, Crow Wing County Road 16, in Ideal Corners, about 8 miles east of Pequot Lakes.
The workshop, "Shoreland Essentials for Lakes Leaders," is jointly sponsored by the Pine River Watershed Alliance and the Shoreland Education Program offered by the University of Minnesota Extension statewide.
"This workshop will have breakout sessions on topics such as onsite septic compliance, invasive species, working with local official and how to deal with difficult issues through effective communications," said Eleanor Burkett, University of Minnesota Extension-Shoreland Education program and a workshop committee member.
The free workshop includes a lake leader notebook filled with useful information and resource links valued at more than $25. Lunch will also be provided.
Lake association leaders, association members and others interested in lake stewardship are encouraged to attend. Although free, registration is required by Friday.

Deep Portage announces summer program series
The Deep Portage Learning Center's Summer Naturalist Program Series is scheduled Wednesdays and Thursdays during select weeks this summer.
The two-program-per-day schedule (10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.) includes Tree Top Tower, bog, beaver and animal adaption hikes; fish and block printing; family canoeing; wild edibles; basic orienteering; family climbing wall; pioneer olympics; family archery; and water canaries programs.
These family friendly programs begin June 18. Any necessary equipment is provided by Deep Portage and included in the cost. Fees are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger and Deep Portage members. The climbing wall program is $10 per climber and climbers must be at least 8 years of age.

Boat show scheduled at Grand Casino Mille Lacs
The Grand Boat Show is scheduled Friday through June 15 at Grand Casino Mille Lacs.
The event will feature more than 100 boats and a chance to win a new fishing boat. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Admission is free.
Featured will be a Donzi performance boat from Brainerd Sport & Marine and Mille Lacs Motorsports Sea Doo sport boats and Manitou pontoons. CrystalÐPierz Marine will feature Bennington pontoons equipped with a self-contained boat-lift system as well as water demo rides in Triton and Crestliner walleye boats at Eddy's Lake Mille Lacs Resort.

Wildwedge recognized as Certified Wildlife Habitat
Wildwedge Golf & Mini Golf, on Highway 371 just north of Pequot Lakes, has been recognized as an official Certified Wildlife Habitat site by the National Wildlife Federation.
The property attracts a variety of birds, butterflies and other wildlife while helping to protect the local environment. Wildwedge has added a stream and waterfall and several manmade ponds, which attract numerous birds, waterfowl and other types of wildlife. The landscaping also includes hundreds of perennials, crab apple trees, shrubs and other trees.
Future plans include adding a butterfly garden to attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
