BUSINESS NOTES Nacey elected to AAF
Board of Directors
Gina Nacey of Adventure Creative Group, with offices in Brainerd, was elected to a two-year term on the American Advertising Federation's national Board of Directors during the annual conference in Atlanta
Nacey's election to the AAF Board comes just as she left her post as chairwoman of the AAF's 8th District. Previously, she served as governor of the AAF's 8th District overseeing 13 local chapters of the AAF in Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. She has served as president of the local central Minnesota chapter, which recently honored her with the Silver Medal Award for lifetime achievement in the field of advertising.
Nacey is responsible for creative strategy at Adventure Creative Group.
Hlad gains cancer credential
St. Joseph's Medical Center announced that Amanda Hlad, cancer registrar at St. Joseph's Medical Center, recently was awarded the certified tumor registrar credential by the National Cancer Registrars Association's Council on Certification.
In March, Hlad was one of 112 candidates successfully completing a comprehensive written examination on principles of cancer data abstracting and registry management.
As the cancer registrar at SJMC, Hlad is responsible for working with physicians to track all the cancer patients who are treated at St. Joseph's. The Cancer Committee, which is an inter-disciplinary team of physicians, nurses and staff, review the records quarterly to identify opportunities to improve patient care. The cancer data that Hlad and the physicians collect is used to investigate the causes and effective treatments for the many forms of cancer treated in the community.
Crosslake Veterinary receives accreditation
CROSSLAKE - Crosslake Veterinary Hospital of Crosslake has again received accreditation following a comprehensive evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association.
The evaluation includes a quality assessment review of the hospital's facility, medical equipment, practice methods and pet health care management. Fifteen percent of all small animal veterinary practices in the U.S. have achieved AAHA accreditation. In order to maintain accredited status, Crosslake Veterinary Hospital must continue to be evaluated regularly by the association's consultants.
The AAHA is an international organization of more than 40,000 veterinary care providers who treat companion animals. Crosslake Veterinary Hospital has been an accredited practice member of the association since 1998.
Mahoney joins Lakewood Health System
STAPLES - Dr. Patricia Mahoney joined Lakewood Health System of Staples as a general surgeon.
Mahoney is board-certified in general surgery and has special interests in laparoscopic surgery and breast disease. Mahoney comes to Lakewood Health System from Fairmont, where she practiced general surgery and served an area covering six communities.
Before her appointment there, while practicing in San Antonio, Mahoney was recognized as a preferred physician by other physicians in the San Antonio medical community. She was recognized for multiple clinical science research awards, Lakewood said in a news release.
Mahoney finished medical school at the University of South Dakota, where she was recognized for multiple research and academic awards including the promotion of research in the biological sciences. Mahoney completed her residency in general surgery at Fairview Health System in Cleveland and the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., where she served as the chief resident among her peers.
Erickson earns HR certification
BAXTER - Kim Erickson, practice manager at Lakeland Veterinary Hospital, recently earned certification as a professional in human resources.
The certification, awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute, signifies that Erickson possesses the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in human resource management necessary to pass a rigorous examination demonstrating a mastery of the body of knowledge in the field.
To become certified, an applicant must pass a comprehensive examination and demonstrate a strong background of professional human resource experience.
Picek joins Confidence Learning Center
Cathe Picek, Deerwood, joined Confidence Learning Center as special events director in late May replacing Melissa Grover.
One of her first assignments was the coordination of the 25th annual Fishing Classic and 35th annual Golf Classic at Cragun's Legacy Courses and Resort in mid-June.
Picek has more than 25 years experience in sales and marketing. She was events and communications coordinator for the Brainerd Lakes Chamber and served as a chamber ambassador. The last 18 months, Picek worked at the Brainerd Dispatch in advertising sales and as online sales manager. She graduated with honors in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in organizational behavior from the College of St. Scholastica in the Brainerd ADEP program.

Russell Herder gains recognition
Russell Herder, with offices in Brainerd, recently received awards and recognition.
The business received two Telly Awards in a recent international competition. The firm was awarded a bronze Telly for its "Tricky Photographer" spot. The 30-second spot airs in the Indianapolis region as part of Hendricks Regional Health's current campaign. The agency received a second bronze Telly for its "Now That's More" television campaign for Shooting Star Casino, Hotel and Event Center.
Russell Herder recently received an Aster Award for its campaign for Hennepin County Medical Center. The firm captured a Silver Award for its efforts in the outdoor transit and academic medical center grouping.
Russell Herder was recently recognized for excellence in communications media at the WorldMediaFestival in Hamburg, Germany. The firm was awarded a finalist diploma in the public relations: health category for its STD awareness campaign, "Wrap It Up." The campaign was developed in connection with the Minnesota Department of Health's STD awareness and prevention initiatives.
