ROCKTALK
Local band The District gears up for American Celebration
The members of The District will have their work cut out for them when they headline the American Celebration Friday at Adamson Field. They'll be on a stage that has hosted big names like Steppenwolf and Gary Puckett.

Brainerd Community Action decided to stay local this year, and The District - whose members work for the Brainerd School District by day - aims to justify that decision.

During a rehearsal last week at Washington Educational Services Building, the rock 'n' roll cover band fielded questions from the Dispatch.

What is your favorite song to play?

Todd Lyscio, acoustic guitar/vocals, Baxter: "It's actually a combination of two, Sister Hazel's "All for You" and "Run-Around" by Blues Traveler. It's just a fun medley. I like the groove to it. Tim does a great job on the vocals, Brian Wallace has some parts on the harmonica. It's fun because everyone has a part."

If you go

What: American Celebration entertainment.

Featuring: Music by Battle of the Bands winner, Bill "The King" Musel and The District, followed by fireworks.

When: 7 p.m. Friday.

Where: Adamson Field, along River Road East, Brainerd.

Admission: Free. Bring your own blanket or lawn chair.

Andrea Lipovetz, vocals/egg shaker, Brainerd: "Long Train Runnin'" by the Doobie Brothers." It's in my opinion one of the greatest songs of all time, and we do it well. We all come alive when we do it."

Steve "Gus" Augustinack, drums, Baxter: "'All Summer Long' by Kid Rock. It's a relatively new one. It's a fun, easygoing song that brings back lots of memories. It talks about laying around on the dock listening to 'Sweet Home Alabama.' That was big on the radio the summers when I was in college, a long time ago."

Steve Pelkey, guitar, Brainerd: "'You Shook Me All Night Long' (by AC/DC). It has good guitar parts and it just rocks."

Brian Wallace, rhythm guitar/vocals, Baxter: "'Vertigo' by U2. It's recent, it really rocks and it's right in my vocal range."

Tim Peabody, vocals/percussion, Nisswa: "I really like the new one were doing, 'Mercy' (by Duffy). It's jazzy; Andrea Lipovetz does a great job (on the vocals). I think the crowd will be surprised."

What does it mean to you to play in The District?

Chuck Whalen, bass, Merrifield: "A number of us played in the Swingin' Sertomans, and of course that's coming to an end now, but for all these years we've been playing these song parodies. So I'm excited about the different kinds of music we're playing in this group, because we're playing stuff from the '70s to today. I'm just really happy to be back playing music and learning a lot of different bass stuff."

What does it mean to you to play at the American Celebration?

Jeff Johnson, guitar/keyboards, Baxter: "It's exciting to be playing in front of a large group of people. We've been working really hard to make certain that we play well. I've played in front of 2 or 3,000 people but I've been told we can expect 8 or 9,000 people. So yeah, it'll be the largest crowd I've played before. All of us have been around a long time in various bands, so it's kind of cool to have a bunch of us wannabes and never-wases playing in front of a big group."
