Readers weigh in on mosquito spraying
This time might be the charm.

The Brainerd City Council is once again considering the possibility of mosquito spraying in the city. It's been an ongoing topic in the city for more than decade.

Here's what readers had to say in online comments Tuesday on brainerddispatch.com in reaction to the city council story:

The small city of Appleton sprays for mosquitoes. It is wonderful to be able to sit out in the evenings and not be chewed up. - Terriannk

It's funny that the costs are brought up as concerns. My first thought as I was reading this, was "health issues" not costs. As a council member, I'd be more apt to investigate the spraying on the basis of what it does to the ecosystem and the possible health risks to young children and pets, etc. When I read "costs" I had to laugh out loud. People ... there are a lot more risks to investigate and they all aren't about the bottom line. - soupseeds

Originally from the Brainerd area, I now live in N.D. Our small town sprays for mosquitoes. It's wonderful. In three years here, I have been bitten by a mosquito maybe 7-8 times. My parents were just up visiting and we sat outside three nights in a row and they kept commenting on how they couldn't believe they were not getting bitten. I say do it. It's well worth the money. Grand Forks, N.D., also does it. Huge results. - frankieluv

The city increases our taxes for things we don't want/need, so add $5 on to my property taxes to put into the mosquito spray fund, at least I will benefit from it!! - dhanson

So you don't like mosquitoes. Well, I do. Mosquitoes, gnats, deer flies, horse flies and bees are among my best friends. If not for these critters, the whole county would be overrun with California riff-raff. Be careful what you wish for! - LESTERLEE

Was just in Thief River Falls over the weekend, they had a spray truck going around town. Come on, what service did they look at that would cost $100,000. If Thief River Falls, which is half the size of Brainerd, and certainly the tax base isn't there why can't we. - kma12271

Ahh, our tax dollars at work... - Jake_Harsha

Could we genetically engineer the mosquitoes to bite tourists only? I will chip in on it. - gtunder

I sometimes wonder how many people have really seen it bad if they think the mosquitoes we see are bad. It's a very temporary benefit ... and VERY expensive. With the city's poor financial situation already this is the last thing we need. Some people need to toughen up! - Windyhills

I have lived in this town my whole life. I think that this is the worst year ever. When I was a kid here in Brainerd, they sprayed for all bugs not just the mosquitoes. It was great! I agree with -dhanson- add the cost of $5 to our property taxes. - Jen3372

If the mosquitoes weren't this bad I'd be able to keep my grass mowed. - unoochouno
