OUTDOORS NOTES DNR eyes comments on forests, roads, trails
The DNR is seeking public comments on its forest classification and motor vehicle route designation proposal for six state forests in an eight-county planning area in east-central Minnesota, including Crow Wing, Cass and Aitkin counties.
The east-central forests include Land O' Lakes in Cass/Crow Wing counties; Hill River, Savanna, and Waukenabo in Aitkin County, Snake River in Kanabec County, and DAR in Pine County. The proposal also designates roads and trails on scattered DNR lands in Anoka, Aitkin, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, southern Cass and Washington counties.
The DNR has scheduled three meetings on the proposal: Sept. 23 at Aitkin High School, Sept. 24 at Mora High School and Sept. 25 at Pine River/Backus High School.

Shoreland Buffer Zone Expo scheduled Aug. 9
"Shoreland Buffer Zone Expo 2008 - All the Buzz on B Zones" is scheduled Aug. 9 at Deep Portage Conservation Reserve east of Hackensack.
The day-long event is co-sponsored by the Cass County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America and Deep Portage.
Workshops and exhibits will provide property owners with the specific how-to-do-it information they need to prepare for and execute a shoreland buffer zone installation, maintain and monitor their septic system and manage potentially polluting water run-off.
Space is limited and pre-registration is required. A fee of $15 per person or $25 per couple will be charged for lunch and participation in the workshops. Access to the informational exhibits is free.
Shoreland owners, nonprofit organizations and businesses interested in participating in the expo or obtaining more information may contact Jack Fitzgerald, secretary, Cass County Chapter, IWLA, at (218) 682-2941 or by e-mail at jjfitz@tds.net.
Proposed spawning bed, fish preserve changes
The DNR will identify several new spawning beds and fish preserves in the northern half of Minnesota and adjust the descriptions of several existing beds/preserves if proposed new rules are adopted by the department.
Residents have until 4:30 p.m. Aug. 15, to comment on the proposed rules, that affect portions of Itasca, Lake, Beltrami, Todd, St. Louis, Carlton, Clearwater, Hubbard, Becker, Douglas, Cass, Crow Wing, Ottertail, Cook, Pope and Grant counties.
Comments and questions about the rules must be submitted in writing by the deadline to Linda Erickson-Eastwood, DNR fisheries program manager, at 500 Lafayette Road, Box 20, St. Paul, MN 55155-4020.
