Pierz's Bell signs with Gophers' golf program LOCAL SPORTS SHORTS
Robert Bell of Pierz High School has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University Minnesota men's golf program and will join the team as a freshman for the 2008-09 season, director of golf Brad James announced Thursday.
Bell finished his senior season by winning 14 of 17 tournaments, including Section 6-2A and state Class 2A individual titles.
This summer he has won three of four Minnesota PGA Junior Tour tournaments, including the Minnesota State Junior Boys Championship. By winning the state junior title, Bell qualified for the National Junior PGA Championships at TPC Rivers Bend in Maineville, Ohio from Aug. 13-16.
Elks Soccer Shoot announces results
Eight youths from the Elks Central District will advance to the Minnesota State Elks Soccer Shoot.
Four boys and four girls advanced to the state soccer shoot at the Minnesota Elks Youth Camp following their participation in the Brainerd Elks Lodge's District Soccer Shoot on July 19 at Forestview Middle School in Baxter.
Advancing to state competitions are Gina Wasniewski, Ironton, and Eli Roberts, Brainerd, in the under 8-years-old category; Bryn Waters, Brainerd, and Braydin Larson, Alexandria, in the under 10 division; Brielle Larson, Alexandria, and David Saxum, Baxter, in the under 12 division; and Brooke Nelson, Baxter, and Joshua Murrey, Nisswa, in the under 14 age group.
Contestants, ages 6-13 represented six Elks Lodges from Alexandria, Brainerd, Fergus Falls, Hutchinson, Wadena and Willmar. The Minnesota State Elks Soccer Shoot will be Aug. 16 at the Elks Youth Camp, north of Merrifield.
Mid-State honors Pequot Lakes players
Six Pequot Lakes players in spring sports have been recognized by the Mid-State Conference.
In softball, the Patriots' Chelsey Thorson and Karli Wiewel made the All-Mid-State team. Honorable mention went to Katie Peterson.
In baseball, Pequot's Tyler Wittwer and Ben Kepner were all-conference. Brandon Hilts and Ryan Pahl received honorable mention.
Bonsante to box on ESPN2
Crosby-Ironton High School graduate Anthony "The Bullet Bonsante" will box Adonis Stevenson for the WBC Intercontinental Supermiddleweight title at 8 p.m. Friday in Montreal on ESPN2.
Stevenson is 12-0 with 11 knockouts. Bonsante is 32-9-3 and coming off a fifth-round knockout of Teddy Muller at Grand Casino Hinckley on June 6.
