BUSINESS NOTES Staffon is inducted into president's club
Carla Staffon was inducted into the Morris Communications' 2007 President's Club.
Staffon has been employed with the Brainerd Dispatch for years. She has served her career at the Dispatch in the advertising department as a sales representative. Staffon is a member of the Brainerd Charter Commission, Brainerd Coalition of Neighborhoods and is on the board of the Brainerd Northside Neighborhood Association.
Rutske promoted to vice president
BAXTER - Thomas Rutske, of Arnold S. Johnson Properties in Baxter, was promoted from general manager to vice president.
Rutske will continue to be responsible for property management, real estate development and human resources. Rutske served as human resources director and facilities director for Universal Pensions Inc. for 17 years. He also has 30 years experience in business ownership and management, including six years in real estate and real estate appraisals.
Juranek appointed at ChamberMaster
BAXTER - Scott Juranek joined ChamberMaster in Baxter as CEO/CTO.
Juranek spent the last six years at Landis+Gyr (formerly Hunt Technologies) in Pequot Lakes with positions as director of software development and vice president of software. In these roles he managed the design, development and business strategy for the software products that were used by hundreds of electric utilities worldwide. Most recently he managed more than 40 software engineers at Minnesota and Georgia locations. Prior to Landis+Gyr, Juranek worked in software consulting with Compaq Global Services in Minneapolis. He has earned degrees in business administration and computer science from Hastings College in Hastings, Neb.
Richardson named to CLC position
John Richardson, a 2004 graduate of Central Lakes College, is a new admissions representative for the college.
Richardson will serve as the primary CLC resource and representative to students and families in the school districts of Cass, Todd and Wadena counties.
He is working on his master's degree in social responsibility at St. Cloud State University and has worked most recently as an admissions grad assistant in the Center for International Studies at SCSU.
Richardson graduated summa cum laude in 2006 from SCSU with a bachelor's degree in international relations. Before coming to CLC as a student, Richardson worked at Confidence Learning Center as an outdoor education specialist from 1999 to 2001. He also has experience in surveying with the United States Geological Survey and the DNR.
Richardson was employed five years as a sales assistant with Little Farm Market in Brainerd. He has served as president of the Brainerd Lakes Audubon Society.
Richardson, Brainerd, is a native of East Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
Banks joins Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
Charlie Banks of Baxter joined Thrivent Financial for Lutherans as a financial associate with the organization's Northwestern Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota Regional Financial Office. Banks offers area Lutherans comprehensive financial strategies, personal customer service and a wide range of financial products and has an office on Brandon Road in Baxter.
Before joining Thrivent Financial, Banks worked at the Weyerhaeuser Deerwood plant. Banks graduated from Central Lakes College, receiving an associate of arts degree in general study and computer science.
Nelson completes training for insurance
BAXTER - UBS Financial Services Inc. announced Christopher Nelson of its Baxter office has completed all training and licensure for the sale of long-term care insurance.
Nelson has his bachelor's degree from St. John's University and master's degree from the College of St. Scholastica. He has extensive background in the hospitality industry and family-owned businesses.
Kuhlenbeck joins Fitness Challenge Bootcamps
Kasey Kuhlenbeck has joined Fitness Challenge Bootcamps as the fitness bootcamp instructor for the 5:30-6:30 a.m. Gregory Park bootcamp in Brainerd starting Aug. 11.
Kuhlenbeck has been a personal trainer for 15 years with experience in training military fitness groups, personal training and bodybuilding training. She is a former bodybuilder, trainer at the YMCA and currently owns her own personal training business as well as being a mother of four.
Reed joins Easy Hearing Clinic
Easy Hearing Clinic of Brainerd announced Dawn Reed joined the staff and will be working in the front office as a patient care coordinator.
Reed is from the Staples area originally and has many years of customer service. Most recently she worked at the Brainerd Dispatch.
Sullivan serves on foundation board
The Minnesota Real Estate Foundation announced new board officers for 2008-2009, including John Sullivan, Navillus Land Co. in Baxter, secretary.
The Minnesota Real Estate Foundation aims to build community by simplifying and facilitating the gifting of real estate. The foundation, realestategiving.com, started in 2003. The foundation partners with professional advisers, nonprofits and individual donors to enhance philanthropy in the state and beyond.
Clinical psychologist joins Lakewood
STAPLES - Julie Eggers Huber, a clinical psychologist, joined Lakewood Health System, Staples.
Huber is a licensed psychologist under the Minnesota Board of Psychology.
Huber's time will be mainly focused at Lakewood Reflections, Lakewood Health System's senior behavioral health program and with residents of the Care Center, both of which are located at Lakewood Health System's Senior Campus.
Huber comes to Lakewood Health System from Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Services in Brainerd where she developed and implemented multiple behavioral programs and oversaw and managed services as the psychology clinical lead. Huber has an extensive background in dialectical behavior therapy. She finished her doctorate in psychology at the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology in Minneapolis and has completed multiple psychology internships in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Arizona.
Aswegan named August Employee of Month
Cheryl Aswegan, activities assistant for the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, was named the August Employee of the Month by the Little Falls Chamber of Commerce.
The Little Falls resident "is enthusiastic and life-giving in her work with the Clare Residence sisters," according to Sister Caroline Stoltz, interim director of health services at St. Francis Convent. "Cheryl created and organized the activities department in a way that enhances the quality of life and meets the social needs of the sisters, either on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting. She is creative and includes everyone."
VonHoltum joins Lakewood Bank
Jim VonHoltum joined Lakewood Bank as vice president.
VonHoltum has more than a decade of experience in the banking industry - most recently serving as branch manager for Bank of the West in Worthington. VonHoltum will be working out of Lakewood Bank's Baxter location and assisting customers with commercial and consumer loans.
LaFollette gains award
Delores LaFollette of Brainerd was presented with the state 2008 Award for Outstanding Volunteer Leadership in Advocacy by AARP Minnesota at a recognition ceremony July 18 at the Embassy Suites in Bloomington.
Brainerd Chapter IAAP welcomes New Members
The Brainerd Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals welcomed several new members to the chapter at a meeting in June at Madden's Resort.
New members include Angie Mass, Rebecca Mies, Susan Schutt, Kathryn Stotka, Shirley Tomberlin and Tanya Wiskow.
Mass served as administrator at Cascade Medspa and Laser Centre, Dermatology Professionals, P.A. and Kurtis Waters M.D., P.A. since October 2007. Mass was previously employed at Bioscrip Pharmacy Inc. in Eden Prairie for five years as the mail order accounts receivable manager. Mass has 11 years of accounts receivable experience. She earned a bachelor's degree in management from the College of St. Scholastica.
Mies has been employed with Cragun's Resort for 11 years as a sales manager/coordinator. She attended St. Cloud State University, worked in food service and was employed as a nanny for a family in Pequot Lakes.
Schutt has served as administrative assistant for Kueper's Architects and Builders for the past year. Schutt's previous experience includes 15 years in banking, finance and management.
Stotka served as sales director at Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge in Deerwood for eight seasons. Previously, she was director of sales for Woodland Container and director of sales for Nortech Systems Inc. She owns and operates The Ledger-Up North Accounting business.
Tomberlin served as a chiropractic assistant at the Family Chiropractic Clinic in Baxter for seven years. She is a designer for Home and Garden Party. She previously worked at Cragun's Resort in the reservations office and in the Trust Department at Zapp Bank in St. Cloud. She is a graduate of the St. Cloud Business College with a degree in accounting. She has 15 years experience in banking, financial investing, accounting, sales and marketing, customer service and clerical work.
Wiskow, Breezy Point, has served at Landecker & Associates Inc. as executive/surveying assistant for the past three years. In her nine years with the firm, Wiskow has served as client service specialist and administrative assistant. Before joining Landecker & Associates Inc., she worked seasonally for several years as an assistant to the Cass County recorder. She earned her bachelor's degree with honors from the College of St. Scholastica with majors in English and secondary education and with minors in psychology and religious studies. She has a teaching license for grades 7-12.

Hundreds attend Women's Leadership Conference
HINCKLEY - The fourth annual Women Empowering Women for Indian Nations conference began last week with a welcoming reception at the Grand Casino Hinckley Convention Center.
Melanie Benjamin, chief executive of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, welcomed guests as the host of the conference. Benjamin, a founding member of the organization, encouraged hundreds of women from Indian nations across the country to use this time to build leadership skills, to plan for change in their communities and to discuss and learn about tribal business opportunities as well as government and legal policies impacting Indian nations today.
Noted conference speakers included former Cherokee Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller; former Oglala Sioux President Cecelia Fire Thunder; Christina Danforth, chairperson of the Native American Bank Corp.; and Jacqueline Johnson, executive director of the National Congress of American Indians.
Conference workshops focused on leadership skills, the power of the Indian vote, finance, public relations, lobbying, preventing violence against women and training related to how tribes can use the recently adopted United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Larson recognized for education and leadership
Consolidated Telephone Co. CEO/General Manager Kevin Larson was recently recognized for his commitment to furthering his education in telecommunications.
Larson was awarded NTCA's Excellence in Leadership Certificate for 2006-2007. NTCA, the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association, is a nonprofit association that represents more than 580 rural telephone cooperatives and small commercial companies. To obtain the EIL certificate, Larson attended nine or more NTCA seminars or conferences in any three consecutive calendar years. The award acknowledges and shows appreciation for Larson's outstanding participation in NTCA's educational events.
Weight Loss Surgery Center achieves accreditation
St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd announced the Weight Loss Surgery Center at St. Joseph's Medical Center was accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a "Level 2b Accredited Bariatric Center."
The American College of Surgeons granted full approval after a comprehensive application process and an official site visit. This endorsement is reserved for facilities that demonstrate high quality care, continuous improvement strategies and a commitment to staying abreast of the latest standards.
The center offers gastric bypass and minimally invasive laparoscopic band surgery for the treatment of obesity.
Wynn becomes CLC Foundation assistant
Susan Wynn of Deerwood was named a Central Lakes College Foundation office specialist.
She worked from 1990 to 2007 as an administrative assistant for Weyerhauser Co., Deerwood. The plant closed in December of 2007. Wynn has experience in banking, as a receptionist and new accounts representative for First National of Crosby from 1985-90. From 1979-84, she was an administrative assistant to one of the partners of the LaRue Investment Corp. and had a Minnesota real estate license.
Business After Hours planned Aug. 12
CROSBY - The Cuyuna Range Chamber's networking event, Business After Hours, is planned 5-7 p.m. Aug. 12 and will be hosted by Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union on Main Street in Crosby.
Cost is $2. The event includes refreshments and appetizers.
Golden Horizons to host CHOW Wednesday
Golden Horizons Assisted Living & Memory Care, 13631 East Shore Road in Crosslake, is hosting the Brainerd Lakes Chamber's networking event, CHOW, from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

CLC to host food manager course
A Certified Food Manager course is planned 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 13-14 in the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd.
Certification is required in most Minnesota food establishments.
Participants are trained and tested through the ServSafe Serving Safe Food Certification course. They will learn about potentially hazardous foods and safe food handling practices, the HACCP system of food safety, setting up standards and completion upon passing the required exam.
Colette Pohlkamp is the instructor. Tuition is $160.

Going Into Business class offered Aug. 21
Central Lakes College in Brainerd will host a Going Into Business For Yourself class from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 21 in the Business and Industry Center on the Brainerd campus.
This class covers all areas of business startup, helpful advice on how to get your dream off the ground, how to become and stay profitable, including financing your new venture.
This session will assist the potential business owner through the process of developing the project, provide you with the opportunity to have your questions addressed and identify other assistance resources.
Follow-up counseling is available to qualified individuals from the Small Business Development Center's team of consultants free of charge. Tuition is $40 per person and $60 for two business partners. Instructor is Jay Bock.
The deadline to register is Aug. 14.

Mann Lake Supply donates matching funds
HACKENSACK - Jack and Betty Thomas, owners of Mann Lake Supply of Hackensack, will donate up to $10,000 to match other donations toward the new medical clinic scheduled to open in Hackensack Oct. 1.
Pines Area Medical Development Association, a nonprofit 501(c)3 IRS tax-exempt organization formed in 2007 to raise money to establish a clinic in the city, is seeking donations to raise $500,000 to cover set-up costs and initial operations at the clinic.
