Backus receives low-interest loan
for water treatment infrastructure LOCAL BRIEFS
BACKUS - A low-interest loan of nearly $164,195 has been awarded to the city of Backus to pay for maintenance and repair of a 50,000-gallon water tower, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development reported.
Financing is from the Minnesota Public Facilities Authority, an independent infrastructure financing authority that was created by the Legislature in 1987.
Backus area residents can expect to save $35,484 on debt service costs, compared with borrowing at market rates. The interest rate for the PFA loan is 2.27 percent for a 20-year term.
The project is expected to begin in mid-September and be completed by mid-October.
Voters may register to vote at polling place
The deadline has passed for residents to register to vote in advance of the Sept. 9 primary, the Crow Wing County auditor's office reported.
County residents can register to vote Sept. 9 at their polling place with:
¥ A valid Minnesota driver's license or Minnesota photo identification card with current address in precinct.
¥ Photo identification plus yellow receipt for Minnesota driver's license with current address in precinct.
¥ Student photo identification with current fee statement showing current address in precinct.
¥ Tribal identification recognized by the BIA with name, address, signature and picture.
¥ Prior registration in the precinct.
¥ Notice of late registration from the Crow Wing County auditor.
¥ Voucher.
¥ Utility bill in addition to a photo identification.
The above forms of identification are the only ones authorized by Minnesota laws and rules. For more information contact the Crow Wing County auditor's office at 824-1045.
Motorcycle rider course scheduled at college
Central Lakes College will offer the Basic Rider course for motorcyclists at the Brainerd campus Sept. 18, 20, and 21.
The course includes both classroom and on-cycle instruction. Motorcycles are provided at no charge.
Riders age 18 and up can earn their motorcycle license by successfully completing the course. It is recommended that registrants have a permit before attending this class.
The fee is $160. Dates and times are 5:30-10 p.m. Sept. 18 and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. or 2-7 p.m. Sept. 20 and 21. Registration deadline is Sept. 11.
Motorcycle classes start again in April 2009.

Oberstar announces grant for Hackensack Fire Department
HACKENSACK - The Hackensack Fire Department has received a federal grant to purchase high-tech thermal imaging cameras, Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., announced today.
The Hackensack Fire Department will receive $10,047 from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants program.
Yoga classes planned
Lakes Area Yoga Association, a nonprofit Brainerd-based organization, announces its lineup of classes for fall.
Classes, offered in Brainerd, Nisswa and Ideal Township, begin in September and continue for 10 weeks.
