This is going to sound kind of random, but I'm glad to see "Fanboys" will finally fly to the big screen on Feb. 6. It's the latest in the proud history of "Star Wars" parodies, among them:
¥ "George Lucas in Love," a short film where Lucas finds the characters and plot of "Star Wars" by walking around his college campus - for example, the pseudo-wise man who talks backwards.
¥ "Troops" - basically, "Cops" with stormtroopers.
¥ "Chad Vader," about Darth's black-sheep brother who works at a supermarket.
¥ The "Family Guy" "Star Wars" episode. Darth Stewie waiting for a low bid for a contractor to cover up the exhaust port is a classic, but I am partial to the extended couch-from-the-trash-compactor gag.
¥ The "Robot Chicken" "Star Wars" bits. Seth Green enlists the vocal talents of Mark Hamill and even Lucas on this show where grown men play with action figures.
¥ That fan-made YouTube clip of Porkins crashing into the Death Star because he's loaded down with a burger, fries and a soft drink while trying to fly his X-wing.
"Fanboys" - about four 20-something fans who attempt to steal a copy of "The Phantom Menace" before its 1999 release - is a bit different from what's come before. It's a full-length comedy with actors you've heard of, including Chris Marquette ("Joan of Arcadia"), Jay Baruchel ("Undeclared") and Kristen Bell ("Veronica Mars"). As with "Family Guy" and "Robot Chicken," it was made with a thumbs-up from Lucas, who let the crew film at Skywalker Ranch.
The trailer, which has been circulating the Web for a long time, has hits (Seth Rogen as a spot-on Trekkie) and misses (why do people think William Shatner is funny?). I'm holding out hope. Sort of like what these fans were doing when waiting for that little indie film a decade ago.
