April Baumgarten joined The Forum in February 2019 as an investigative reporter. She grew up on a ranch 10 miles southeast of Belfield, N.D., where her family raises Hereford cattle. She double majored in communications and history/political science at the University of Jamestown, N.D.

Baumgarten started her journalism career in 2011 with The Dickinson Press as a city government and energy reporter. She also was the editor of the Hazen Star and Center Republican, as well as a news editor for The Dickinson Press and Grand Forks Herald. She has covered a wide range of topics, including politics, business, education and agriculture.

She currently reports on crime, courts and public safety.

The former president said Cayler Ellingson was targeted and killed in cold blood for being a proud Republican. The former president didn’t mention Brandt by name, but he called the motorist a maniac and a “radical left, stupid person.”
