The Mid-Town Depot is now open following a major remodel that transformed the former SuperAmerica on a busy Brainerd corner.

The SuperAmerica store and station closed last fall. Chad Knudson, owner of the Wild Rice Depot in south Brainerd and the Cornerstore along Highway 210 toward Pillager, purchased the site from Kelly Bevans, who continues to operate Kelly’s Service business.

The new gas pumps, complete with viewing screen updates on weather and news while people are refueling, are with Cenex.

Knudson invested several hundred thousand dollars in renovations. The former convenience store was basically gutted with a new modern look and a lot of inventory from candy to an entire wall of beverages and an expanded option for frozen and fresh food.

For a convenience store, Knudson said the whole idea is to provide inventory for people who need something quick and easy.

The Mid-Town Depot is the second store Knudson purchased and renovated and, not surprisingly with construction, the project turned out to be more extensive when completed but it met what Knudson had in mind.

“It’s nice and open and clean and bright,” he said.

For the future, Knudson is looking at more options for the fresh foods.

The store employs about six people. Knudson said he believes the bigger selection of ice cream and frozen foods sets the convenience store apart. Knudson also noted the wide range of drinks available, which stretch along one wall with a lot of variety, he said, that people won’t find many places.

Knudson said the remodel has been well received since the recent opening.

McDonald’s closed its restaurant in Walmart and didn’t renew its lease in the big retail store. The McDonald’s franchise was part of Walmart since the new store opened. The McDonald’s handled walk-in traffic but didn’t have a drive-thru. There is no announcement from Walmart on what business could potentially take up a lease in the space in the future.
