BAXTER-Vercon, Inc., a Baxter-based construction company, won a 2016 Excellence in Design Award from American Buildings Company.

The award was presented to Vercon for its work in constructing SM Energy, a 55,000-square-foot metal office building in Williston, N.D.

The ABC's Excellence in Design Awards recognize new building construction that illustrates design flexibility and the use of innovative technology to create structures of outstanding utility and beauty within the metal building construction industry.

"No matter what the size or scope, it's our goal to build high quality, high performance buildings that meet the needs of our clients-whether it's metal, concrete or stick-built construction," said Stephen Halonen, Vercon's CEO, in a news release.

Vercon's award-winning project, SM Energy features architectural precast concrete wall panels, aluminum wrapped thermal blocks for energy savings, and many skewed angles and varying rooflines for a unique design aesthetic.

"Throughout the project, our focus was to create a quality end product, and a positive experience for our client along the way," said Tony Ylitalo, Vercon's project manager for the SM Energy building. "To receive national recognition for a job well done is icing on the cake."

Vercon also received a "Building of the Year" Excellence in Design Award from ABC in 2014 for Total Ag Industries, a 42,000 square foot pre-engineered steel building in Hillsboro, N.D.

Vercon, which was formed in 2013 when longtime construction companies Northway Construction Services in Baxter and JP Structures in Menahga merged, specializes in commercial construction, including education, financial, retail, manufacturing and office buildings-as well as residential construction and remodeling projects around the upper Midwest.

With offices in Baxter, Menahga, Minneapolis and Williston, N.D., Vercon's local commercial project portfolio includes the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport hangar, the renovation of Winegar Colby Dental and Orthodontics in Baxter, and several projects at Grand View Lodge, among others.
