Leftover Valentine's Day bouquets found new homes Monday, Feb. 15, at senior living complexes and skilled nursing facilities in Brainerd and Baxter.

Kerri Martin of North Country Floral said she knows how to order flowers for special days like Valentine's Day, but this year, she did not count on the COVID-19 factor. After owning North Country Floral with her husband Randy for six years, she felt confident the number of red roses was just right for the holiday, but the pandemic changed things.

The weekend went well, but even on Sunday when she expected folks to show up and say they forgot the big day, the lack of traffic surprised her. Last year, Martin said Valentine's Day sales were spectacular and according to her, it was what she lived on during the long pandemic confinement.

When Monday came, she had 340 red roses in the shop with nowhere to go. "I cannot let these go to waste," Martin said she thought.

So they wrapped up bundles of 20 roses and delivered the flowers of Northern Lakes Senior Living in Baxter, Edgewood Vista in Baxter and Brainerd, Good Samaritan Society-Woodland and Good Samaritan Society-Bethany in Brainerd, and Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Baxter.

"I am happy to give the flowers away just to make someone's day," Martin said.
