Local AAUW member elected to Minnesota American Association of University Women Nominations Committee

Saundra Martell, a member of the Brainerd Lakes Area American Association of University Women Branch, has been elected to a two-year term on the American Association of University Women of Minnesota Nominations Committee. The election results were announced at the state meeting May 1.

The state meeting was virtual with Kim Churches,the organization's executive director, as the featured speaker.

BAXTER — The Washington High School class of 1954 will meet 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Grizzly’s.

Nisswa Women’s Club to meet May 20

The Nisswa Women’s Club will meet 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, via Zoom.

Heidi Hahn, assistant superintendent of Brainerd Public Schools, will speak on the topic, “Has COVID changed the classroom forever?” Hahn will share some of the strategies the schools implemented to educate young people throughout the past 18 months and offer some insights regarding changes that may prove helpful in the future. In addition to Hahn’s presentation, the recipients of the four $1,500 college scholarships that the club is giving to graduating seniors will be announced. This year three of the scholarships will be awarded to Brainerd seniors, and a Pequot Lakes student will receive the fourth.

Lois Kuntz will lead an inspiration and Karen DeVries, president, will conduct a short business meeting before introducing Hahn’s presentation.

Memorial service to honor deceased Post and Auxiliary members set

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at the Brainerd American Legion to honor the Post and Auxiliary members who passed away from May 1, 2019, to April 30, 2021.

Family and friends of deceased members are invited to attend the ceremony. Coffee and cake will be served following the ceremony.

Crosslake Area Garden Club plant sale planned

CROSSLAKE — The Crosslake Area Garden Club will have a plant sale 8:30-11 a.m. June 5 at the Crosslake Community Center Shelter, 14126 Daggett Pine Road (just off Route 66). Masks will be required and distancing. Cash or checks accepted, no debit or credit cards

Perennials, annuals, vegetables and a garden merchandise table will be available.

Disabled American Veterans to meet May 20

The monthly meeting for the Disabled American Veterans Crow Wing County Chapter No. 22 will be 7 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at the Brainerd VFW Club.

The face covering and social distancing rules for the COVID-19 pandemic will be observed.

Chapter 22 officers meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

Aitkin/Crow Wing County Council meeting set

The next Aitkin/Crow Wing County council meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 24, at the Deerwood Post 557.

All members of the American Legion are encouraged to attend.

Discussions will include upcoming events, Post happenings and other pertinent information regarding the American Legion.
