Brainerd Mighty Gulls second baseman Joe Lima got a great birthday present. When the Gulls defeated the league-leading Wisconsin Woodchucks 13-8, Lima was at bat in the 8th when the announcer told fans it was his birthday. They gave him a huge ovation and he promptly singled, and later scored.

A proposed junk car ordinance, which brought lengthy discussion before the city council, is likely to be fine-tuned before being brought to a vote. A roomful of citizens understood the need for controls but worried that hobbyists and amateur mechanics might be hurt.



40 years ago (1979)

The city council received a letter from the state health commissioner saying that the city had run out of options and must now fluoridate Brainerd’s water. The council replied with a letter saying they were “taking the matter under advisement.” Former alderman Bob Olson says he will sue the city to fluoridate.

80 years ago (1939)

A 60-year-old St. Paul florist, whose body was found in Cullen Lake at 4:30 this morning, was ruled a suicide by drowning by John Thabes, county coroner. The man had suffered a nervous breakdown on May 20 and had been convalescing at a cabin there since then.



100 years ago (1919)

Hubert & Hickethier, conducting the Iron Exchange Building barber shop, have been compelled to add a fourth chair to their establishment to take care of a rapidly expanding business. They have engaged “Babe” Haliday to man the fourth chair.
