The Warrior swim team faced the formidable challenge of trying to defeat Alexandria in its own pool in an invitational meet. Alexandria won every event but diving, where Brainerd's Jake Huso prevailed. Brainerd finished second overall with 463 points.

30 years ago (1987)

Increasing numbers of state businesses, schools and hospitals are issuing no-smoking decrees. In Brainerd, Larco Mfg. bans smoking in offices, but allows it in break rooms and on the plant floor. At JC Penney in the Brainerd Mall, employees can smoke in break rooms and bathrooms.

40 years ago (1977)

(Photo) Roy Androli of Merrifield speared this 14-7 northern at Lake Edward, the third northern he has lanced this winter scaling over the 13-pound mark. He weighed it in at Sportland Bait Shop.

The Salvation Army and local Red Cross chapter are raising their quotas for donations toward flood relief. Record flooding on the lower Mississippi has already killed 117 and left one million homeless. Brainerd school children are donating their spending money to help.

100 years ago (1917)

To the martial strains of its 35-piece band, the Brainerd Northern Pacific Marching Club boarded their 13-coach special train this morning at 5:45 a.m. bound for the St. Paul Winter Carnival. The band busted the bass drum in Little Falls and telegraphed St. Paul for a replacement.
