Soccer could be alive and kicking in Baxter before next fall. The school board authorized negotiations with Baxter to build a soccer complex on 6.8 acres of city-owned land near Southdale. The school board has set aside $75,000 for construction.

About 500 people, including toddlers and school children, crammed into the Brainerd-Crow Wing County Airport to await Republican presidential hopeful Pat Robertson. The former TV evangelist arrived to cheers and optimism after his surprise second place showing in the Iowa caucuses.

40 years ago (1978)

Quick action by lifeguards at the YMCA pool averted a drowning yesterday when an 11-year-old Motley boy sank to the bottom of the pool. Cheryl Severson and Nancy Gulbrandson pulled the boy from the pool and YMCA director Don Toft administered mouth-to-mouth.

60 years ago (1958)

The sheriff is investigating after burglars hit the Homestead Tavern, one mile north on Hwy 371. There was no money in the till, but the thieves got all coins from a bowling machine, cigarette machine and juke box, plus took all beer, cigarettes and candy in the place.
