A new phone and communication system costing $193,000 was approved by the county board on a 4-1 vote. The old switchboard was continually breaking down, causing 30-minute outages. And it could not support a phone for each employee needing one.

Jerry Smith and Troy Jackson each rushed for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns as Brainerd Community College defeated Austin 35-13 in its season opener. The Raiders had significant trouble with its passing game, completing 1 of 10 passes for 17 yards.

Staples High School Girls' Golf coach Glen Hasselberg made it four straight men's golf championships at the Terrace Golf Course, and his fifth title overall. Hasselberg birdied the final hole to edge Mark Matanich by a single stroke, 72 to 73.

Incorrect vote totals called in to the Dispatch from Deerwood gave Ralph Cole 189 votes for county treasurer when in fact he had only seven. The difference was enough to put Oscar Carlson, not Cole, into the general election. Deerwood reported incorrect totals in several races.

Thieves broke into a gas station at 7th and Washington Streets last night and took a vending machine and sone oil. The same thieves hit a used car lot west of town last night, removing 14 wheels and tires from cars, and taking horns, sirens and other removable pieces.

Fred Moritz found a bear killing one of his calves (the third one he lost) and shot it. He sold the hide to a Crosby man and the meat to a hotel. When Game Warden A.P. Cardle found out, he charged Moritz and confiscated the hide. He was unable to get back the meat that hotel diners had eaten.
