When most people speak of 33 years in school administration, they are completing a career. For Bob Gross, who just announced his retirement as Brainerd superintendent, it's a prelude. Gross has accepted a position as superintendent at the 2,800-student Singapore American School.

On Jan. 14, during rehearsal for the upcoming Brainerd Community College musical, a leading actress underwent an emergency appendectomy. Amy Roach was to have played Gypsy Rose Lee in "Gypsy, but stage veteran Sandy Brown had to step in.

The county board and city council agreed to have the county's legislators propose state legislation that would allow a referendum to seek bonding authority to raise more than $700,000 for expansion at the joint airport. The total project is $7 million, but federal and state funds will pay 90 percent.

Fifteen points down near the end of the first quarter and facing elimination from the coming region tournament, the Brainerd JC Raiders caught fire to stun Hibbing 95-83. Big Ken Jacobs led the way with 33 points, with great support from Roger Moilanen and Russ Noreen.

The return to effective scoring of previously injured Bob Alderman, who popped in 10 points, helped the Warriors roll over Little Falls 41-20 in another conference win. The regulars clicked better than any time in a month, but reserves played more than half the game.

A Brainerd woman asked a local hardware company to send a man to set up her kitchen range. He failed to show up and she needed to use it. So she skidded the 700-pound range into the house and set it up herself. She told this reporter, "This should prove it's the age of women."
