As adult smoking across the country has dropped in the past decade, smoking among high school students has increased. County public health nurses Judy Rian and Joyce Mueller are promoting prevention, including cessation classes and free nicotine patches.

Gasoline prices here are dropping or leveling off after two weeks of increases resulting from the wreck of the Exxon Valdez oil tanker in Alaska. Some area service stations have seen prices again drop below a dollar a gallon following increases of 12 or 13 cents recently.

Faculty at the state's 18 community colleges voted by a 95 percent margin to approve a two-year contract that gave them a 3 percent cost of living hike that had been denied them two years ago. Locally, the strike had closed all classes, including adult evening classes.

Fewer than 1,800 voters went to the polls yesterday to turn down all four bond issues on the ballot. The $100,000 four-part proposal would have gone to library improvements, street seal coating, a new fire engine and improvements to the fire station.

An automobile belonging to Lester Hage, Brainerd, was stolen from the downtown area last night about 8 o'clock. The car, a 1939 grey Chevrolet, was parked on 5th Street, just off Laurel. Hage had his keys with him so the thief must have had a set or started the car some other way.
