The Brainerd High School Knowledge Bowl team is bound for the state tournament after finishing third in regional competition. Team members are: Ben Bedard, Andrew Clough, Marc Oliphant, Eric Thesing and Graham Lampa. Craig Rezac is the coach.

After postponements for cold weather, Brainerd and Little Falls finally met for their baseball opener, with the Warriors taking a 6-3 conference win. Eric Pikula pitched the first five innings for the win, giving up just two hits and striking out seven.

John Olsen, a 6-9, 200-pound center for Brainerd Community College the past two seasons, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for West Texas State Univ. Coach Ken Edwards flew to Brainerd to sign Olsen, who was also a basketball star for the Warriors.

 

  • 60 years ago (1959)

The 160-acre grass fire that Brainerd firemen battled yesterday, turned into a 640-acre blaze before it could be contained today. Pheasants and rabbits exited the area in a hurry as firemen fought the blaze for nine hours without a break.

A total of $1,100.17 was raised at the Brainerd Policemen's Ball on St. Patrick's Day, with the largest crowd in city history attending the dance. The money will be used to purchase an antenna and mast, and a radio set for one of the squad cars.

The North Side kids baseball team defeated the Harrison School team by a score of 14 to 12 on Saturday. Dan Lawrence umpired the game and lived through the experience. The news was given to the Dispatch by boyhood sources deemed reliable, though they have stretched the truth in the past.
