In a unanimous decision, the school board asked Jerry Walseth, 53, of Colorado, to be the new district superintendent, replacing Bob Gross. Walseth, who accepted the offer, said he and his wife looked at Brainerd because his wife's mother lives in Bemidji.

It took awhile - 45 years to be exact - but Gene McLaughlin of Brainerd is finally getting his WWII Bronze Star. He earned it in three of the toughest battles of the war in Europe - he was a combat medic in the Battle of the Bulge, Colmar Pocket and Battle for the Ruhr.

Dan Hackett is the kind of pilot they had in mind when they invented the airplane. The former Hollywood stunt pilot in 32 films, who has 27,600 hours in the air, now spends six months a year as a fire bomber for the DNR, this year flying fire retardant planes out of Brainerd.

Deerwood No. 2, the defending champ in the Paul Bunyan Rifle League, continued its amazing comeback at the Brainerd Armory with a one-point shoot-off victory over the Brainerd team, 1,905 to 1,904. Deerwood's three-point victory a week ago had tied Brainerd for the league lead.

In his post as Lt. Gov. of Minnesota, Brainerd's C. Elmer Anderson will attend the New York World's Fair in late June as part of the official state delegation. Others attending will be Gov. Harold Stassen and several state senators and representatives.

So pretty and effective were the decorations that were put up for a dance at the Gardner Hall, that former Senator George Gardner has asked that they be preserved and not taken down. He wants them to make a pleasing assembly hall for an upcoming convention.
