Brainerd Fire Chief Kevin Mahle apologized to the Baxter city council "for being stinky." Mahle had been fighting fires all day and didn't have time to go home to change clothes. Several council members had noticed the smell of smoke as it wafted through the building.

Workers are hauling away a century of memories as they demolish six houses in the block east of St. Joseph's Medical Center. When they finish there will be a parking lot for staff and visitor parking surrounding the sole remaining house, that of John Kennedy, who has refused to sell to the hospital.

The city council last night approved fees for loading zones and for "hooding" parking meters. Meters are often hooded for construction projects, costing the city revenue. The fees assessed will be 35 cents per day or $7.50 per month per meter.80 years ago (1939)Jimmie Lutz, widely known proprietor of the popcorn wagon at 6th and Front Streets, was in the hospital today after being hit in the face by a drunk St. Cloud man at the Gateway Tavern. Witnesses said Lutz had been pushed into the man and he apologized, but the man hit him, breaking his glasses.

The Brainerd City Band has changed the location of its fund raising dance from Gardner Hall to the Lum Park Pavilion on May 8. Band director Richard Rehl says the pavilion was given to the band practically free, as they try to raise funds for their trip to the state band contest this summer.
