A Potlatch employee who witnessed Brainerd High School students' canoes capsize in the Mississippi said he believes they were in real danger. He called the Dispatch in response to a story that appeared May 17 saying that rescuers needn't have been called out and all was well.

Brainerd Community College tennis player Andrea Wischmann found out timing is everything. During the regular season she was defeated by Mesabi's Maria Padgett. But yesterday, that loss was easy to forget as she topped Padgett 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 to take the state title at No. 4 singles.

A fire that erupted from a gushing propane gas tanker last night completely destroyed the Echo Ridge Motel in Crosslake and left the adjoining restaurant and bar damaged beyond repair. The fire also consumed a nearby cabin, a garage, the propane truck and scorched two nearby homes.

Nate Schuety hurled three-hit ball as the YMCA team - last year's state champions - beat Mills Motor 9-1 in the opening of the city softball league. In the second game, BARE rode a 26-hit barrage to run wild over the Wards team for a 29-2 win.

Refusing to abide by umpire Ed Hall's decision on a play at third base, Swedie Erickson pulled his Crosby players off the field Sunday at the Koering Grounds. It was the 7th inning and the score at the time was 3 to 1 in favor of Crosby. Brainerd players sat around for awhile and then went home.
