20 years ago (1999)

With help from a DNR pilot, three stranded Iowa fishermen were rescued after a long night on Mille Lacs Lake. The three went fishing about 6:30 last night and a search was started when they hadn’t returned by 3:00 a.m. The plane spotted them with their swamped boat and sent help at 11:00 a.m.

30 years ago (1989)

(Photos) Local anglers did well catching large northerns this week. Curt Compton, Nisswa, caught an 18-pound northern on a Rapala in 10 feet of water on Lake Edward. Meanwhile, Phil Gronsberg, Brainerd, caught a 16-pounder in the Mississippi using Muskie Tinsel.

40 years ago (1979)

An explosion in the Hackensack post office at 2:45 a.m. today left a bathroom in shambles, raised the building’s roof and set it back down, blew out all the windows and did extensive interior damage. Officials believe a recently installed gas water heater was the culprit.

60 years ago (1959)

A witness scheduled to testify at a grand jury hearing at the third floor of the court house died moments after he was stricken with a heart attack. Two physicians were nearby but were unable to save him. He was the neighbor of a woman who admitted slaying her husband the morning of July 4.

80 years ago (1939)

Sale of what’s believed to be “hot” lubricating oil in various parts of the county is being investigated by sheriff’s deputies. Two men, one about 25 and other about 40, offered cases of oil to businesses along 371 at less than half the normal price.

100 years ago (1919)

Tony Bolke of Hubert accidentally collided with a cow near the Peasely Farm corner, coming upon a herd in the dark last night at 10 p.m. His car, a Hudson six, had its radiator and lights badly damaged. People viewing the scene said the crash was unavoidable due to the sharp corner.
