30 years ago (1989)

(Photos) Gary Ormsby’s Top Fuel dragster did a wheel stand of the starting line before crashing into the retaining wall during the NorthStar Nationals drag races at BIR. Ormsby, the series points leader, was not injured in the crash.

40 years ago (1979)

In a nationally televised heavyweight fight from the Met Sports Center in Bloomington, Scott LeDoux, the “Fighting Frenchman” originally from C-I, knocked Ken Norton down in the 8th and again in the 10th round, but the fight was declared a draw. Minnesotans think LeDoux won the fight.

60 years ago (1959)

More than 6,700 persons were conducted on tours at Brainerd’s Northwest Paper Co. mill during their recent open house. The occasion was the installation and now operation of a new paper machine, which will increase the mill’s production by more than 150 tons per day.

80 years ago (1939)

100 years ago (1919)

The problem of towing your car home after the big fellow breaks down has been solved by Frank Schrader of Pequot. His 4,000 pound Mitchell car broke something and stalled on the Gull Lake Road. He got a ride to town, bought a Chevrolet and towed the Mitchell to his home.
