It's every customer's dream that his comments be taken seriously once they are dropped in the suggestion box. Well, the Herberger's CEO was listening, and added 12,00 square feet to the store in the Westgate Mall, making aisles wider and fitting rooms larger.

 

  • 30 years ago (1989)

The Brainerd Legion baseball team swatted Deerwood-Ironton 11-1 in five innings as Andy Hess and Mark Vopatek combined on a one-hitter. Brainerd improved to 8-0 on the season. Hess struck out the first three batters he faced, then gave up a bunt single.

 

  • 40 years ago (1979)

Steady hurling from Greg Erickson, backed by an eight-hit attack, paced manager Mike Dunn's Brainerd Legion team to a 4-1 revenge win over Pierz. Erickson tossed a three-hitter and struck out four as Brainerd improved its record to 5-3 on the season.

 

  • 60 years ago (1959)

(Photos) Miss Pat Padgett and Duane Blanck have returned to Brainerd from Boys' and Girls' State programs where they received training in government procedures. Both were enthusiastic about the American Legion sponsored programs held at the Univ. of Minnesota.

A dozen Brainerd businesses, including six gas stations, three 3.2 beer places and one off-sale liquor establishment will close after June 30 due to lack of licenses. After repeated warnings from the city council to renew, they'll have to wait until the next council meeting July 2.

 

  • 100 years ago (1919)

Following a raid by Sheriff Claus Theorin and his deputies, things will be a little dryer on the Mille Lacs shore. They raided three places and charged "Jim" Halstead with selling liquor without a license. It took a big motor truck to haul back the whiskey and beer to store in the county jail.
