The Warriors Aron Stumvoll won the boy’s cross country meet at the Bemidji Invitational with a time of 16:10. Brainerd edged Bemidji using a tie-breaker to gain second place. The Warriors ran well as five of their six runners recorded personal bests.

30 years ago (1989)

Bo, the newest addition to Ron Herbote’s household, is 13-years-old and arrived with a broken jaw from a home that could no longer care for him. Bo is a 7-foot boa constrictor that escaped from his cage at Franklin Junior High. A caged rat was put out to lure him back, and he broke his jaw on the cage.

40 years ago (1979)

County voters yesterday voted 5,818 to 1,006 in favor of an airport referendum that will allow the county and the city of Brainerd to bond for $900,000 as the local share of an $8 million improvement that would allow a longer runway for jets and an enlarged terminal building.

60 years ago (1959)

For a team whose coach says it is “the worst I’ve had in 11 years,” Duluth Central proved thought to handle last night. Brainerd got a huge break when its pass in the final two minutes was intercepted, but fumbled, with Brainerd recovering. They scored with 44 seconds left for a 12-6 win.

80 years ago (1939)

County attorney F.E. Ebner has ruled that the village of Pequot has the right to reduce the license fee of Bill Wels’ Liquor Store by $375 provided it did not infringe on state law. The $2,750 license, which was the highest in the state, will now be $2,375.

100 years ago (1919)

A post of the American Legion is to be organized in Brainerd on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce under the direction of J.O. Ostby of Pequot, county chairman. Local men aiding in starting the post are J.E. Stevenson and Harrison Sherwood.
