(Photo) Brainerd High School students gathered at the school flagpole this morning for “See You at the Pole” National Day of Student Prayer. There were gatherings at school flagpoles through Brainerd and there will be a rally at 6:45 p.m. at Tornstrom Auditorium.

30 years ago (1989)

A $5 million capital request for Brainerd Community College is fourth on the list of requests by the state community college system. The total list is $91 million. In support, the system said they are in their fifth straight year of growth, with BCC leading the pack, up 8 percent this year.

40 years ago (1979)

The County Senior Citizens Center at 704 Front St. opened its doors two days ago to hundreds of happy elderly folks in the Brainerd area. The center is small - only one room - but a kitchen and two other rooms will soon be completed, said director Jane Stewart.

60 years ago (1959)

The chilly night was pierced by the sound of a woman screaming for help. Responding to a call from Paul Bunyan Motel, Deputy Arvid Greenwalt investigated with his flashlight only to find a bear cub, an attraction at Paul Bunyan Center next door, was the source of the surprisingly human screams.

80 years ago (1939)

“If history repeats itself, the Cuyuna iron range is due for a boom,” according to Emmett Butler, head of the company that owns six mines on the range. A significant possibility is that chemical processing plants may be built to convert Cuyuna ores into manganese.

100 years ago (1919)

The first airplane delivery of parcels here occurred when Lt. Miller flew from Minneapolis to Brainerd for the Dayton Co. The Curtis biplane landed at the Gruenhagen field south of Brainerd, bringing packages for several people who had ordered them during the state fair.
