Fighting tobacco use among Minnesota young people will get a $17.7 million boost in the next 18 months. That was part of a message at a news conference at the court house featuring the state’s health commissioner. The goal is to reduce teen smoking by 30 percent by 2005.

30 years ago (1989)

When the wishbone offense clicks, it produces explosive football. That, plus a stout defense led to the Warrior 37-7 football win over Alexandria. Brainerd ran its record to 2-1 behind the rushing of Todd Vanek with 114 yards and a TD, plus Brian Wheeler’s 89 yards and a TD.

(Photo) First half champion Brainerd Dispatch edged second half champ Viking Coca Cola 7 to 5 in their 18-hole playoff for the Men’s Twilight League title. Leo Marchel topped Mike Gardner 76 to 79, while Emmett Brennan shot 75 to beat Jim Martinson to lead Dispatch to victory.

80 years ago (1939)

A 55-year-old Crosby Beach man was shot by a companion as three men were “shining” deer last night near the Oreland mine. The shooter said he thought his friend was a deer. The victim died at the scene and leaves a wife and 11 children. A coroner’s inquest was held this afternoon.

100 years ago (1919)

The Ford driven by Glenn Morgan came to grief at the Ransford Hotel. He stepped on the gas instead of the brakes, jumped an 18-inch curb, destroyed two benches, broke the plate glass window, knocked off a screen door and pushed a cement planter into the lobby and down the basement stairs.
