Raising one’s own children is tough enough without having to pay to provide for others. But that’s the case in the county, where payments for Aid to Families with Dependent Children total $4 million a year, while recoveries from absent parents (usually the father) come to just $437,000.

Veteran District Judge Harold Schultz was named by the Minn. Supreme Court to preside at the show-cause hearing in the Brainerd fluoridation dispute. He replaces Judge James Preece, who disqualified himself, and follows two other judges who refused because of conflicts.

60 years ago (1959)

The local Kiwanis Club voted to donate $500 to the Crow Wing Park fund, bringing that total to over $3,000 to date. Contributions of $15,000 are being sought to match the $15,000 appropriated by the legislature for purchase of land at the site of Old Crow Wing.

80 years ago (1939)

County sheriff Roy Wickland today begins a journey of 1,800 miles over several days as he travels to Dearborn, Mich. to pick up Don Reynolds, formerly of Ironton, who is held by police there. Reynolds has been charged with abandonment of his wife and children.

100 years ago (1919)

Earl O’Brien, making grocery deliveries on N. Broadway for the O’Brien Mercantile Co., had an unusual experience with his Ford delivery truck. He let it stand and it started up and ran down the hill into the woods, not spilling a single article. Joe Gabiou will make a halter so Earl can tie the truck up.
