The face of Hwy 371 in Baxter will change as businesses move, are demolished and new ones added. Lakeland Veterinary Clinic has been sold, will be demolished to build a bank, and owner Dick Piepgras will build a new clinic behind Arby’s. Comfort Suites will also build next to Arby’s.

30 years ago (1989)

The decision by the Minn. Environmental Quality Board not to call for a statewide environmental impact study on increased timber harvest in the state, was still viewed as a partial victory by opponents of increased timber-industry plant construction, such as the one at Deerwood.

40 years ago (1979)

Humorist Garrison Keillor, host of “A Prairie Home Companion,” is scheduled to appear at Franklin Junior High School on Oct. 9. The show will include music from the Powdermilk Biscuit Band and an appearance by Pop Wagner. It will feature reports from Lake Woebegon.

60 years ago (1959)

The city council last night approved bids totaling $51,000 for repairs to the Laurel Street bridge. Structural repairs to the piers will be complete by Nov. 15 while deck repairs will take until December. The bridge will be closed to traffic until that time.

At the Brainerd Rifle Club shoot ending yesterday, R. S. Johnson, a local barber, won the 1919 trophy awarded by the NRA. He scored 43 rapid fire at 200 yards, 46 slow fire at 300 yards and 32 slow fire at 500 yards, for a total of 118 points.
