During his visit to the lakes area, Gov. Jesse Ventura was busy. He visited Hunt Technologies in Pequot Lakes, talked with students at Mississippi Horizons school, met with the Rotary Club, held a press conference and appointed State Sen. Dave Ten Eyck, 45, as a new district judge.

Brainerd's Alena Grabowski will advance to the state Class AA individual tennis tournament after a runnerup finish in Region 8AA. “The Warriors had a couple of individuals go to state in 1980 or 81, but Alena's the first since I've coached here,” said coach Lisa Salo.

Brainerd's carillonic bells, which sound the time each hour of the day from the top of the court house, are out of operation it was announced today. They were turned off last week when it was found repairs were needed, but a service man won't be here for at least two weeks.

80 years ago (1939)

Just 170 tax delinquent Brainerd lots, of the 1,600 offered for sale, were purchased yesterday at the land auction conducted by county auditor Hagberg. The sale brought in $5,117 with down payments totaling $2,728 and the balance in five annual payments.

100 years ago (1919)

An unusual sight in this district was a flock of fifteen large white swans on Gull Lake near the summer cottage of I.U. White. The largest number ever seen before was a group of three that landed three years ago. Hunters were careful to see they weren't molested.
