Jeff Brever of Staples repeated as Class A state cross country individual champ in a course record of 15:42.1 to lead Staples to its fourth straight Class A state team title. Staples took the top four spots with Kurt Detloff 2nd, followed by Shannon Webster and Justin Tholl. Paul Mayavski was 12th.

30 years ago (1989)

The school board is exploring a Baxter site for a proposed new junior high school. They are asking the county board to sell them 80 or more acres one mile west of CR 48; the school site would be south of a westerly extension of College Drive. The site could also host an elementary school.

40 years ago (1979)

A shallow, 52-acre lake northwest of Pelican Lake, and known as Cree Bay, is the focus of the Crow Wing Board of Adjustment. After careful study, it appears that the 274 lots platted there should never have been established, and the area is only good for fish spawning and wildlife habitat.

60 years ago (1959)

Arrival of natural gas in Brainerd will be celebrated tomorrow, the culmination of several years of efforts. The ceremony will take place at a border station south of KLIZ Radio followed by a lunch at the Elks Club. Minn. Valley Natural Gas Co. says all its customers here are now using natural gas.

80 years ago (1939)

Spectators at last night's city council meeting got a taste of “exile” and a few laughs, too, as the council chased them out of the council chamber while it deliberated in secrecy after being hit with a flood of protests. It was protest night, but only one of them was discussed in open session.

100 years ago (1919)

(Proclamation) In view of the everlasting significance of the 11th of November, I believe the city should make it memorable. As mayor, I urge all citizens and businesses to decorate in recognition of the signing of the Armistice which ended the terrible war last year. F.E. Little, Mayor.
