20 years ago (1999)

It was another golden moment for Brainerd oral surgeon Bill Baker and his teammates from the 1980 Olympic hockey team. Yesterday at Madison Square Garden, Sports Illustrated magazine called their gold medal victory the greatest sports moment of the century.

30 years ago (1989)

Two mayors, a woman playing a grand piano and the corporate president showed up at the ribbon-cutting for the 18,000-square-foot expansion of Herberger's in the Westgate Mall. Store manager Bill Brekken said the store is pleased with the growth here and expanded faster than expected.

40 years ago (1979)

Tim Frazer, with a combined score of 17.4, became Brainerd's first state champion in gymnastics when he won the gold medal in floor exercise. Frazer also won a bronze medal in the vault. Warrior coach Paul Bloom said the previous best performance was a 4th place by Mike Millam last year.

60 years ago (1959)

A district court jury found Lila Jean Matheny, 26, not guilty of second degree murder in the shotgun death of her husband. County attorney Carl Erickson and defense attorney Joe Ryan, Aitkin, each spent an hour in final arguments. The jury deliberated for more than nine hours.

80 years ago (1939)

100 years ago (1919)

The highway report from the weather bureau in Minneapolis says most highways in the state are reported as impassible for autos and very difficult even for sleighs. High winds have created huge drifts, and even where roads are bare of snow they are impassible due to deep, frozen ruts.
