Cal Poly junior Chris Bjorklund, a Brainerd High School grad, continued his hot scoring streak with 29 points in a 72-67 win over Indiana-Purdue. He hit 9 of 16 from the floor and 10 of 11 free throws, including four straight in the closing moments to seal the victory.

30 years ago (1989)

School district teachers received an early Christmas present last night when the school board approved a two-year salary and benefit package for its 445 K-12 teachers worth 9.6% over two years. Starting salary for an entry-level teacher will move from $21,000 to $21,500 this year, and to $22,000 next year.

80 years ago (1939)

A second jury conviction in the series of slot machine cases now in district court brought the same penalty as the first conviction – a $200 fine or four months in jail. This harsh sentence seemed to spur others to plead guilty and receive fines of $100 or 90 days in the county jail.

100 years ago (1919)

Not to be outdone by snow shovelers at other schools, a half-dozen lads at Whittier cleaned their sidewalks last week. And now it is the Harrison School in southeast, where a brigade of six boys cleared 400 feet of sidewalk. An old resident said it's the first time in 25 years that walk has been shoveled.
