County commissioners faced another 30-minute round on annexation issues yesterday. By the end of the discussion, commissioners said they were encouraged by actions of both Brainerd and Baxter, but stopped short of endorsing either. At issue is the part of Unorganized Territory along Hwy 371 north.

30 years ago (1990)

Renewed ice racing at Green Prairie Fish Lake in Morrison County looks unlikely following a tentative ruling by the DNR. The auto races were a weekly event last year at 37 Acres Resort, three miles west of Camp Ripley. Sheriff Paul Tschida has refused to issue a racing permit this year.

40 years ago (1980)

(Photo) Mike Abrahamson and Joe Vrudny each won a pair of events but the Warrior swimmers went down to defeat 91.5 to 80.5 against St. Cloud Apollo. Abrahamson won the 200 and 500 free events, while Vrudny took the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. They both swam on the winning 400 free relay.

60 years ago (1960)

Brainerd and Nisswa will get new telephone numbering systems consisting of seven numerals early next year, a plan named All Number Calling. The system will go nationwide in the next few years. Brainerd will add 829 to their current four digit numbers; Nisswa will add 963 to theirs.

80 years ago (1940)

Fred Hanson, of Nokay Lake, was found not guilty of operating a slot machine at his business. That was the final case of the 78 charged after the huge slot machine raid on July 3. The final score showed 75 pleaded guilty or were convicted at trial, and three were acquitted. Only seven cases went to trial.

100 years ago (1920)

When it was found that the home of Dr. Walter Courtney on Bluff Ave. had been broken into while the family is spending the winter in Florida, several Oriental rugs were missing. Law officers searched the home of Peter Jones, junk dealer, found several rugs and charged him with receiving stolen property. Two brothers are charged with the theft.
