20 years ago (2000)

Jay Anderson, a snowmobiler from Wisconsin, came upon a partly submerged car with a man trapped inside on Gull Lake, where it had broken through thin ice. Luckily, he flagged down a Nisswa first responder who called for help in the form of Deputy Rob Johnston. Together they pulled Kent Johnson, 79, from the car. He's in critical condition.

30 years ago (1990)

40 years ago (1980)

The state health commissioner told Brainerd this morning that it must fluoridate its water supply within 48 hours or he will take the city council to court. Brainerd had asked for a two-month delay to devise a distribution system for unfluoridated water. The letter was hand-delivered to city attorney D.A. Larson.

60 years ago (1960)

A billfold containing $163 in cash was found on the sidewalk in front of the George Bedard Real Estate office yesterday, and turned in to police. It turns out it was lost by a couple who came to make an earnest money payment on a house. They said without its return they couldn't have afforded to buy the property.

80 years ago (1940)

An inquest has been ordered in the death of a 19-year-old girl in Garrison who had locked herself in her bedroom and appears to have shot herself with a .32 revolver. She left a note saying , “I just can't live any longer.” At that exact time her fiance had been in Brainerd taking out a license to marry her.

100 years ago (1920)

Cloaking their operation as operating a stock farm, three range men were taken into custody near Trommald after Special Agent Boyd descended on their farm house and found a copper still, sacks of raisins, 250 gallons of fermenting raisin mash and three gallons of raisin brandy.
