Russ Ebert, an instructor at Central Lakes College, saw the high point of snowmobile racing as Tucker Hibbert won the Super Bowl of Snocross – the ESPN Winter X Games in Vermont. Ebert, who had a big hand in building the sled, said: “A 15-year-old kid wins on a snowmobile hand-built right here in Lakeshore. I couldn't be happier.”

30 years ago (1990)

Two men looking at jewelry at Birgit's Jewelers in the Brainerd Mall yesterday grabbed a display case of rings and ran to a waiting car which sped away with its lights out. Police chased but were unable to catch the thieves. Sgt. Tom Mehr said they grabbed the $1,500 worth of rings when the clerk turned her head for a moment.

40 years ago (1980)

Seventh grader Crystal Savage was at the top of her game, claiming first place in all four events and the all-around, as the Warrior gymnasts topped Alexandria 107.6 to 93. She had great back-up as Lehtitia Moilanen took 2nd on bars and floor, Janet Muesing 2nd on vault, and Sherri Kisskeys runnerup on beam.

60 years ago (1960)

Time is running out for the rest of the conference as the Warrior basketball team powers ahead. Deadlocked at 21-all after the first half, Brainerd routed Staples 34-10 in the second for a 55-31 win, bringing Brainerd's record to 14-1. Don Inwards and Jim Isle each scored 15 points to lead the Warriors.

80 years ago (1940)

Brainerd has had a temperature reversal from Valentine's Day last year to Valentine's Day eve this year. Today's high temp registered 37 above zero, with bright sun and snow starting to melt. Last year the temp dropped to 37 below zero – a swing of almost 75 degrees year over year.
