20 years ago (2000)

“Going in as defending state champs is unbelievable pressure,” said Brainerd Kixters' coach Cindy Clough. But the Kixters still managed to finish in third place at the state dance competition at Williams Arena, with Clough saying, “it was nerves, we were just too excited.” The Kixters executed a record 87 high kicks in their routine.

30 years ago (1990)

Eleven days ago the Warrior boys' hockey team traveled to Alexandria to play a game they'd like to forget, losing 8-2 in their final game of the regular season. Then Brainerd beat Little Falls 8-1 to earn another shot at Alex, this time scoring three straight goals and holding on for a 3-2 win. They move on to face Fergus Falls in the section meet.

40 years ago (1980)

Dick Dean, a successful Brainerd businessman, was quiet outside the boxing ring but a whirlwind of action inside it. In 1953, the last time that Brainerd hosted the regional Golden Gloves card, Dean was the champ at 147 pounds. This weekend his son Kyle, also boxing at 147 pounds, will try to win and move to the Upper Midwest Tourney.

60 years ago (1960)

Earl O'Brien, of Brainerd, died at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was 62. He was a lifetime resident of Brainerd and associated with O'Brien Mercantile Co. O'Brien was a veteran of World War I and was a former Brainerd postmaster. He was a delegate to the national Democratic convention three times.

80 years ago (1940)

Most of the $100,000 estate of the late Capt. Billy Fawcett will go to his widow and five children, according to probate records. It appears that most all of his possessions are owned by his coampany, Fawcett Publications. This includes swanky Breezy Point Lodge on Pelican Lake near Brainerd.
