20 years ago (2000)

An early morning phone call led to a trip to a trip to a West Indies resort for a Baxter couple. Pam Clontz got a call from the “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee” TV show, to which she had sent several postcards. When one was drawn, she answered a trivia question correctly and won the trip.

30 years ago (1990)

Brainerd's city hall has been added to the list of smoke-free public buildings after the council voted last night to ban smoking immediately. With a mayor and four council members who smoke, the odds were against such a move. But certain knowledge of the health factors carried the day.

40 years ago (1980)

Wayne Hasty, demoted from police chief to patrolman yesterday, was nonetheless in the chief's office this morning going through paperwork and defying the order of the civil service commission. Capt. Ken Bjerkness, serving as acting chief, was also in the police chief's office. Hasty said he is appealing the decision.

60 years ago (1960)

(Photo) Duane Lindberg, manager of the Brainerd Braves team in the Great Central League, has one of the youngest group of players in the league. Dale Brown and Bob Rofidal are 16, and Jerry Lyscio just 15. Lyscio pitched one-hit ball for five innings in the opening 9-2 win over Aitkin.

80 years ago (1940)

Forged checks written against non-existent accounts at two Brainerd banks and one in Aitkin left local businesses out more than $107 so far. The checks were being written by a man and woman who made small purchases and took the balance in change. They used local addresses.

100 years ago (1920)

A total of $46 has been raised for flowers to be placed on the graves of Brainerd boys buried in France after the World War. A mass meeting on May 25th of World War veterans and the American Legion will be held to plan for Memorial Day. All veterans are expected to march in the parade in uniform.
